In the spirit of the holiday season, Black FAME kicked off an initiative on December 24, 2020, to feed homeless individuals in Lafayette, Louisiana. The menu consisted of baked ham, mashed potatoes with gravy, mixed vegetables, and a bread roll. Little did we know that this act of kindness would resonate far beyond the limits of our small gathering.
On that Christmas Eve, we served 100 individuals. It was a humbling experience, one that reaffirmed our commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. However, as we reflected on the impact of our initiative, we couldn't help but acknowledge the harsh reality that our efforts merely scratched the surface of a much larger issue.
Louisiana's homelessness statistics paint a sobering picture of the challenges faced by many individuals and families in our community. According to data from January 2020, an estimated 3,173 people experienced homelessness on any given day in Louisiana. Among them were family households, veterans, unaccompanied young adults aged 18-24, and individuals experiencing chronic homelessness. The numbers serve as a reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to address the root causes of homelessness and provide support to those in need.
In light of these statistics, it's clear that our Christmas dinner was just a drop in the ocean compared to the scale of the issue. However, we believe that every act of kindness, no matter how small, has the power to create ripple effects of positive change. With this in mind, we want to extend our support beyond the limits of our event and provide resources for anyone in need of assistance.
If you or a loved one is struggling with homelessness or in need of food assistance, we encourage you to explore the following resources:

In times of hardship, it's important to remember that help is available, and no one should have to face challenges alone. We hope that these resources will serve as a lifeline for those in need and offer a glimmer of hope in difficult times. Together, we can make a difference and build a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
